Baptism Trends
64As a mother with young children, I have found many new trends for celebrating a child’s baptism. More often than not parents are putting more time and effort into planning the wonderful celebration.
Growing up, when I attended a baptism, the gown was a simple white gown purchased at the local department store or catalog and dinner was served at the parent’s or grandparent’s home with mainly family members invited. On occasion, the celebration was held in the church basement and guests were served cake and coffee. Nowadays the celebration is much more elaborate.
My friends are purchasing much more elaborate Christening gowns. These gowns, which are available over the internet, are made of all sorts of lovely materials including silk, satin, linen, or organza decorated with ornately detailed appliqué, beading, and ribbons. Most gowns include a coordinating bonnet with the same ornate detailing.
Another trend I am finding is that the celebration afterwards is becoming much larger and much more detail is going into it. Parents’ are opting to rent a banquet hall or a room at a restaurant with family and many friends in attendance. Fancy centerpieces are added to each of the tables with coordinating blue or pink tablecloths. Everyone in attendance gets a Christian party favor to remember the celebration. And after that large dinner served by wait staff, guests are treated to a dessert of cake and cookies or a buffet of assorted pastries.
Whether you are planning a baptism or attending one, you will find that more time and effort is put into making the celebration a grand event. Baptism gowns have become more elaborate and the celebration afterwards has become much bigger with decorations and added details.
